How to Check How Many Cores You Have? – 4 Procedures

You might be knowing that a processor core (simply referred to as a core) is an individual processing unit in a CPU. Today different devices consist of multi-core processors which means the CPU contains more than a single core. So, a question arises: how to check how many cores you have in your device’s CPU?

Principally, there are different ways to find the core count on computers and mobile devices. For Windows-based computers, you can check it through built-in apps as well as third-party programs. For macOS, you can use the included option in the Apple menu while for mobile devices you can view the count in the “About Phone” section in the system menu or through freeware apps.

Like other areas of technology, things have rapidly changed in the development of processors in the last decade.

Today its common to find multi-core processors particularly octa-core in both computers and smartphones.

How to Check How Many Cores You Have?

As different devices come with a different number of cores in their CPUs, many users are interested in knowing it. For your convenience, there are several ways for its determination.

And we point that users who use different operating systems can check it whether its Windows, macOS and Android.

Here’s how you can check it in your devices ranging from computers to smartphones.

1. Number of Cores in Windows-based Computer

In case if you are operating a Windows-based computer, there are several ways to check out the number of cores inside the CPU. We will have a look at a few ways:

i. Through Task Manager

how many cores you have

The first method is through the Task Manager. Just right-click on the Task Bar and then choose Task Manager. In the interface of Task Manager, select the Performance tab to find the number of processor cores.

ii. Through the System Information App

The second method is to press the Windows key + R to open the “Run” dialog box. Type msinfo32 and press Enter.

The System Information app will open. Choose “Summary” and look for Processor details. It will show you how many cores your CPU has.

iii. Using Command Line

To check the core number on your Windows computer using the command line, open cmd and type the following:

Then press Enter.

iv. Using Windows PowerShell

To find the core count open Windows PowerShell and type the following command and press Enter:

WMIC CPU Get DeviceID,NumberOfCores,NumberOfLogicalProcessors

The output tells you how many CPU cores you have in your system’s CPU.

v. Through Manufacturer’s Website

number of cores intel
This shows that the Intel Core i3-10110U processor has 2 Cores.

If you know the model name and number of your processor, you can head over to the vendor’s website to get all the information you need for the processor including the number of cores.

vi. Using Third-Party Software

You can also try the third-party free software named as CPU-Z. Not only you can check the number of cores running, but it will also give you comprehensive information about your CPU.

2. Number of Cores in a Mac

If you are the owner of Apple products such as MacBook, things get different to find the number of CPU cores. This is because the interface of macOS is different from that of Windows.

Anyway, you can follow the below method to find the total number of cores:

  1. Press the Apple menu placed in the top-left corner of the screen.
  2. Go to About This Mac, then System Report, then Hardware.
  3. You can check the CPU cores by looking at the “Total Number of Cores” below the “Number of Processors” number.

3. Number of Cores in an iPhone

iPhones, no doubt are regarded as premium smartphones. While there’s no direct way to find the number of cores and other CPU characteristics in an iPhone, you can download and install the Lirum Device Info Lite app from the App Store.

We tell you the way below to check the number of cores in your iPhone using the app. And it’s also a quite straightforward process.

  1. After opening the Lirum app, tap Options (three horizontal lines).
  2. Then tap on This Device. Tap CPU next. You can check the characteristics of the CPU including the number of cores.
  3. You can exit the app once you have done the checking.

Do note that the Lite version of this app is free to download from the App Store.

4. Number of Cores in Android Devices

How to Check How Many Cores You Have
CPUZ App is a great way to check how many cores you have on Android.

If you own an Android phone or tablet, it’s also easy to check the number of processor cores.

For this purpose, you can tap the System in the settings menu.

There you can find the “About Phone” section where different info will be displayed particularly related to the device’s CPU.

You can also make use of the CPU-Z app that you can download from the Play Store. This is one of the popular apps that can provide you with detailed information about the CPU in your Android device. Its also free meaning you won’t have to pay for it.

It would be useful to understand the characteristics of your phone’s processor. This will help you in buying a better smartphone next time.

Why Processor Cores Matter for Your Devices?

At first, CPUs had only a single core which meant the presence of a single processing unit. Such a CPU was limited to perform a single set of tasks.

To dramatically improve performance, manufacturers created multi-core processors.  You will find these today in devices such as computers and even smartphones.

The importance of cores can be judged from the fact that the more the cores, the more the CPUs can handle multiple processes at once. So, you will be able to get more out of your devices.

These days dual-core (two cores), quad-core (four cores) and octa-core (eight cores) processors are the most used in different devices. By the way, there’s also a processor with up to 64 cores.

In this article, we answered the question: how to check how many cores you have on different devices. By being aware of the CPU cores, you get a better idea of the multi-tasking capabilities of your devices with different operating systems from Windows to macOS to Android.

You can further use the core count to confirm the specifications in case you bought a new computer or smartphone.

If you are planning to buy a new device, you should look for one with at least a quad-core processor or higher. This will help you to multitask to a great extent in your future devices.
