5 Best Desktops for Animation in 2020

Creating animations is not something that an average desktop can handle. To create animations you truly need the cream. Whether you are a beginner or a professional, you will need to make the right investment in the right tools.

Here we will review some of the best desktops for animations. Animation, particularly 3D, is a very resource heavy task. If you think gaming is strenuous for the PC, 3D animation can be even tougher – depending upon the complexity.

Unlike photo or video editing where you can potentially work without a powerful dedicated graphics card, the same is not true for 3D animation. Hence most of the machines capable of handling 3D animation software are expensive.

However since not everyone has thousands of dollars to dish out, here we have made certain that we pick up desktops from various price ranges that can handle different complexities of 3D animations.

List of Best Desktops for Animation in 2020

The following desktops have the right hardware to handle 3D animations at different levels. You will notice that most, if not all, are gaming grade PCs.

  1. Skytech Archangel Ryzen 5 – Mid Range Recommended PC for Animations
  2. HP Pavilion TG01-0040 – Budget Option for Animators
  3. ROG Strix GL10DH – Powerful Processor
  4. Skytech Archangel Ryzen 7 – Power Processor and Powerful Graphics Card
  5. HP Omen Obelisk 875-1023 – Premium Workstation Grade – For Extreme Users

1. Skytech Archangel Ryzen 5 – Mid Range Recommended PC for Animations

First up we have a recommended desktop for those who looking for a mid range option with a reasonable budget.

As is the case with most desktops for animations, this is a gaming desktop and since gaming itself requires high end hardware, it makes this desktop quite feasible for heavier tasks like 3D animations.

For starters, this desktop features a full tower case. Packed inside is a decent AMD Ryzen 5 3600 processor. This is a mid level processor quite capable of intermediate levels of 3D animation.

3D animations is a processor heavy task, hence, while for large and sophisticated animations this may show its limit, for average animator, it can prove to be more than enough.

Along with a decent processor, this features 500 GB of NVMe SSD storage as well as 16 GB of RAM. The 16 GB of RAM is quite ample and is generally considered as the right amount for most professional work.

The storage, on the other hand, while fast, is low in capacity. You can easily expand that however either with an internal HDD or an external one.

As far as the graphics processing goes, this desktop offers the NVIDIA GTX 1660 Super 6G graphics card. This is a highly capable model not just for gaming but for casual 3D animations.

Of course, the best part about this whole deal is the performance / dollar value. This is a desktop that should be within most people’s budget.

Considering the price and the hardware, this is certainly the best desktop for animation if you prefer mid range options.

2. HP Pavilion TG01-0040 – Budget Option for Animators

Next up we have the most affordable desktop that we can recommend to go for if you want to use animation software. Anything less than this can be damaging to your working experience.

This desktop features a decent AMD Ryzen 5 3500 processor. As far as the processor performance goes, AMD Ryzen 5 3500 and AMD Ryzen 5 3600 featured in the desktop above are more less the same.

The Ryzen 5 3600 has an edge in the sense that it has multi-threads per core which can give it a boost in performance when multitasking. But the performance difference is almost negligible.

Hence with this desktop you are getting the same processing power at much less compared to the desktop above.

Unfortunately, when it comes to graphics card and the RAM department, this desktop lags behind. It features an 8 GB of RAM which is the bear minimum recommend for 3D animation and it features the AMD Radeon RX 5500 4GB graphics card.

The graphics card here is slightly weaker in terms of performance compared to the vanilla NVIDIA GTX 1660. However, it is fair bit weaker than the NVIDIA GTX 1660S featured in the desktop above.

So if you require better GPU, go for the option above. You would only require a better GPU if you believe your animations will be quite complex. Otherwise, if you have limited budget, you can stick with this.

As far as the storage is goes, it features the same amount as the desktop above i.e 512 GB NVMe SSD.

All in all if you are looking for an affordable option, then this is the best desktop for animation.

3. ROG Strix GL10DH – Powerful Processor

If you are looking for a very high performance processor along with a good graphics card, then this is best desktop for animation.

Unlike the desktops above, this features the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X processor and therefore unlike the Ryzen 5 3600, this is an 8 Core processor with 16 threads instead of 6 cores.

While the gaming performance of Ryzen 7 3700X and Ryzen 5 3600 is similar due to the fact that games rarely use as many as 8 cores, video editing, 3D rendering etc can see fairly great results.

The Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 9 processor are generally intended for professionals anyways whereas the Ryzen 5 is more catered toward gamers. Same goes for Intel Core i5, i7 and i9 processors.

So if sheer processing is what you seek, this is right on top while still being fairly affordable (relatively speaking).

The graphics card on this is the top variant of the NVIDIA 1660 line i.e the 1660TI. Hence it is even more powerful than the NVIDIA 1660S we saw earlier in the Skytech Archangel Ryzen 5 above. However, it is still is a mid range GPU good for intermediate levels of 3D animation.

The RAM and storage is reasonable with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of SSD. Again, the storage would have to be naturally expanded if you a lot of data. Hence we recommend investing an internal or an external hard drive.

4. Skytech Archangel Ryzen 7 – Power Processor and Powerful Graphics Card

With this desktop, we are venturing into the premium grade setup with fairly powerful graphics card to match.

This a desktop for those who want a high performance processor as well as a powerful graphics card.

In the previous desktop we saw a good AMD Ryzen 3700X processor. However, the graphics card was still more or less in the mid range.

So what if you require something capable of handling more complex animations? Well you would naturally need to go for better graphics.

That is where this desktop comes into play. This desktop features an AMD Ryzen 7 3700X octa core processor with 16 threads as well as a fairly powerful NVIDIA RTX 2070 graphics.

GTX 1660Ti vs RTX 2070S

The RTX 2070S can give you a far better performance than even the most powerful line of GPU in the 1660 series i.e the 1660Ti.

On top of that, RTX series of graphics card are optimized for ray tracing making them a great tool for 3D animators.

Furthermore, in contrast to the previous desktops this offers a large 1 TB of NVMe SSD instead of just 512 GB.

The RAM, on the other hand, is the same. 16 GB of RAM is great for intermediate projects. However, if you go more advanced we recommend slapping in a few more GBs.

In short, if good processor and a powerful GPU are both a requirement for you, then this is best desktop for animation in terms of value.

5. HP Omen Obelisk 875-1023 – Premium Workstation Grade – For Extreme Users

Finally here we have the most powerful, and of course, the most expensive desktop in this list. If sheer performance is your only yardstick for finding the right PC, then this is best desktop for animation in this list.

Whenever you see a PC featuring a Core i9 or Ryzen 9 processor, you can tell that it means business. These processors are only featured in the most advanced setup and are generally found in workstation grade desktops.

The processor featured here is the Intel Core i9-9900K processor. This is an octa core processor with a base speed 3.6 GHz per core and max speed of 5.00 GHz. Since it is unlocked “K”, it is also overclockable.

There are very few processors out there that can match the performance of this, at least for the PC category.

To match the high performance of the processor, this also features the top end NVIDIA RTX 2080 Super 8 G graphics card. This is among the flagship models of the NVIDIA RTX 2000 series.

So basically, if 4K video editing or 3D animation is on your mind, this is something that would help you achieve that.

It features a huge 32 GB of RAM which makes sense because this desktop is designed to handle very large and complex projects.

It also offers a large 1 TB of NVMe SSD.

So if you have a significant budget, you can put this on your list of potential options.
