How Much RAM Should I Allocate to Minecraft? – Learn Here

The amount of stuff that you could do on a seemingly light weight game is astronomical. While the basic version of the Minecraft seems like the lightest game ever, modding can potentially give your a system a run for its money.

RAM is the biggest culprit. If there is not enough RAM, you may start to face lagging, crashing, and other problems during gameplay. Therefore, in that case, you may want to know how much RAM should I allocate to Minecraft.

This depends on what you play; if you are involved with the Vanilla (unmodded) version you need 2-3GB RAM. It’s recommended allocating 4-5GB RAM if you are playing with moderate to heavy mods. Playing with moderate to heavy mods on recent versions of Minecraft could need 6-8GB of memory as it’s more demanding.

Depending on your computer’s RAM capacity, it’s good to allow at least 1GB of RAM for other processes that are not part of gaming when playing Minecraft.

How Much RAM Should I Allocate to Minecraft?

A good aspect of Minecraft is that you can allocate RAM from the total main memory of your computer. This would allow you to have smooth and enjoyable gameplay that runs without any issues.

However, this depends on what you play. If you are involved with Vanilla gameplay with minimal or no mods and with general plugins you need around 2GB RAM. If you feel that this isn’t enough you can allocate 3GB.

On the other hand, we recommend allocating a minimum of 4-5GB RAM if you are playing with moderate to heavy mods.

Again, the amount of RAM depends entirely upon what you plan to do with it.

Assuming you have a total of 8GB RAM, it’s recommended to close other programs if you are playing Minecraft with mods. Otherwise, you may end up utilizing most of the main memory and end up having Minecraft use the much much slower virtual memory.

You have to consider the fact that you have to allocate enough RAM for the background system applications to RUN smoothly as as well. So if you have 8 GBs of RAM, we recommend leaving at least a GB for the system.

To allocate more RAM to mine craft, we recommend the following steps:

Check How Much RAM You Have Your RAM

You can check how much RAM you have in the Task Manager, Performance TabFirst, you need to determine how much RAM your computer has exactly in Windows 10.

There are many ways to do this. You can do so through the Task Manager. You can also do this from the search bar in Windows 10.

Here’s how:

  1. Type System Information Windows search bar.
  2. Click on the top result. This will take you to the Windows that has the core hardware information.
  3. Pay attention to Installed Physical RAM. You will have the total along with a number that tells you how much RAM is usable.

You must keep this figure in mind while allocating RAM.

Checking RAM Utilization

You can check the RAM utilization for Minecraft using the Task Manager -> Processes Tab; and then looking at the Memory Column.

Looking at the percentage value tells you how much RAM is being utilized. It should not exceed 80-90% ideally and should never reach 100% for nominal system operation.

You can also check the TOTAL RAM utilization for the entire system in the Task Manager -> Performance Tab -> Memory Column.

This information should give you the baseline to work with. It should tell you what your system capacity is and how much of moding you can do with Minecraft with your current hardware.

How to Add More RAM to Minecraft?

Now that you have information regarding your RAM and system RAM utilization, you can experiment with adding more RAM, if your system can handle.

There are several ways to allocate how much RAM goes to Minecraft and we will briefly look at some of them.

1. Allocate RAM Using Default Minecraft Launcher

Here are the steps to assign more RAM to Minecraft using the Default Launcher:

  1. Open the Minecraft Launcher. Choose whatever version you want to play (Bedrock or Java).
  2. From the tabs at the top, choose Installations. You should be able to view a list of releases.
  3. Hover your mouse cursor over the version you want to play. You might see one option here that could be the most recent version.
  4. Click on the 3 white dots appearing on the right side. Then select Edit from the menu.
  5. You will see a screen appearing that contains the installation name and version along with other settings. Choose More Options. Scroll down and look for the field named JVM Arguments.
  6. Pay attention to the following snippet that you see at the beginning for example: -Xmx4G
  7. The number 4 here means that 4GB has been currently allocated to Minecraft. You can change this number and add more RAM to be utilized by the game. Don’t modify any other text in the box.
  8. For example, if you want to allocate 6GB RAM, the snippet would be: -Xmx6G
  9. After making the change, click the green Save button and exit. On launching the game immediately, you should see a performance gain.

2. Allocating More RAM Through Twitch Launcher

Another neat way to allocate more RAM is to use the Twitch Launcer. If you are Twitch streamer than this should come easy to you.

Check for an Increase in RAM Allocated to Minecraft

After you have allocated a specific RAM to Minecraft, you can check and verify if RAM has increased or not. For this, you need to press the F3 button on the keyboard during gameplay and this applies to all the modes.

By looking at the top right corner, you will see how much RAM the game is using.

It’s always a good idea to check for the allocated RAM regularly in Minecraft as you can better monitor and manage memory usage.

Note that if you are playing the game with mods especially, then you may see higher RAM usage.
